On And Off Weakness In Arms And Legs, Muscle Ache, Pain In Back After Taking Antibiotic Cipro For Stomach Issues. Blood Tests Normal. Advice

I am a 27 year old previously healthy female. I started having some stomach issues 4 months back and I was given antibiotic cipro which i took only for 2.5 days. But after that I have been having a lot of weakness in my legs and arms which fluctuates on and off (gets better and then gets worse). I am also having muscle aches and back aches. I don't know what's going on and the doctors have run a number of blood tests but everything looks normal to them.

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
You took ciprofloxacin 4 months and now accusing this drug for muscle weakness and backache.
Please be tension free and take the treatment of problem.
Since 4 months back there was pain in stomach.
Now what is the condition of stomach pain ?
Since you are young so work related tension or stress may be the cause of muscular weakness and backache.
In female mostly urinary tract infection is the most prominent cause of backache and muscular pain , so get in blood as well urine test .
Stomach pain ,if till persist then it may be the main reason of illness.
Consult another physician and get his opinion.
Good luck.

Anesthesiologist Dr. Manjeth Kumar G's  Response
Hello,
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.

I had gone through your query and understand your concern.

Ciprofloxacin is potential to cause muscle weakness even it can cause tendinitis and tendon rupture even after several months after treatment.

Tendinitis is nothing a swelling and inflammation in fibrous tissue connecting bone and muscle. Tendon rupture is a tear in same fibrous tissue.

but still we have to consider other possibilities for weakness of legs and arms and back pain.
I may be due to compression of spinal cord in cervical region.

If you are my patient, i will do thorough physical and neurological examination.
Then with the help of my senior neurologist, i will refer you for CT and MRI cervical spine. if possible i will advise you do the electromyography.

My personal advise is to take rest, eat healthy foods, drink plenty of water,
Do stretching exercises with the help of trainer regularly.

Hope this helps.
If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Wishing you good health.

Regards,
Dr.Manjeth.
