Hi and thank you so much for this query.
I am so happy to know you are being proactive as concerns your sexual and reproductive life. Keep up!
You can start taking birth control pills at any time but it is best at the beginning of a new cycle. This ensures that your normal cycle rhythm is maintained. If you started somewhere in the middle of your cycle, it will simple establish a new cycle and there is no side effect. The first pill should ideally be taken on the first day of your menses.
For now, I will suggest that you start from week one on the first Sunday after your menses. Use a backup method of
contraception until your next menses show up to avoid any unwanted
pregnancy. Then continue using it as stipulated without any more stops.
Please, also remember that pills do not protect against STDs. So please, always consider using protection during intercourse.
Hope this helps and provided answers to your query.
If you have more follow up questions, please, we are ready to address them.
I wish you good health.
Dr. Ditah, MD.
