Hello and welcome to HCM,
A knee joint if formed between two bones-
femur and
tibia.
In between these two bones, there are cartilages.
cartilages are required to provide frictionless movement and cushioning effect for the two bones to smoothly
glide on each other.
Cartilages are avascular structures which once destroyed do not regenerate.
Wear and tear of the cartilages is age related phenomenon.
Initially, when a part of cartilage is preserved, pain killers are used for controlling pain and
hyaluronic acid is used for regeneration of the cartilage with marginal effect.
However, when the cartilage wears off completely,
total joint replacement remains the only option for pain control and for preservation of movements.
Thanks and take care
