Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Our 16- almost 17 year old is home after a year of treatment for adoption- not substance abuse and is experimenting, using very risky behaviors and sneaking out and being gone all day. His psychiatrist does not want to put him on anything for bipolar or adhd because of substance abuse tendencies. THe boy has been on adhd meds and diagnosed numerous times as ADHD combined type with anxiety and depression. SOme literature suggests that no stimulant meds almost lead to substance abuse. This doctor suggests that focalin and Adderall are legal cocaine and bad for our son who was predisposed to drugs at birth. He is on welbrutin and does pretty good, but this impulsive, no boundary behavior makes me think he needs something else.
