Pain And Unsteady Gait After Fusion In Cervical And Lumbar. Could Falls Cause Additional Problems?

My husband has had a fusion in both cervical 14 months ago and lumbar nearly 1 year ago. His pain at times is a 9. He falls at times is unsteady, cannot pass the tests where you run your heel up your shin. He cannot make quick turns and told me on slops his feet cannot keep up with his body. He was a owner/operator of an oil company pulling hoses in 3ft of snow jumping over fences. working in difficult situations. The surgeon says the xrays look good and the neurologist has no answers. Could his falls have caused additional problems? Sometimes at night I hear him moaning in pain. We can't sleep together now. I am beside myself watching him suffer and not able to do the things he loves.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The unsteady gait after the cervical fusion could be related to a nerve root compression or an edema at the site of surgery. This is likely to subside in few weeks after the wound has healed.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
