Pain Around Right Side Of Rib Cage, Started After Sneezing, Paining While Sleeping On Right Side. Bruised Muscle?

I have a pain around the right side of my rib cage for about a week now. It started out just hurting when I coughed or sneezed, so I thought maybe I just bruised something, although I don't remember any hits to that area. Over the next few days it developed into pain when coughing, sneezing, bending over, sleeping. Last night it was extremely painful to sleep on my right side and it hurts to be in a lying position and then get up. How long should I wait to see a doctor? Could this just be a bruised muscle?

This could be a muscle rupture /tear from the attachment of the concerned intercostal muscle which was suddenly contracted while sneezing or coughing. You should see your PCP/Doctor at the earliest.use of muscle relaxants and NSAIDs,cough suppressants and treating the underlying allergic rhinitis or bronchospasm to get rid of the cough is required.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us.
From description it seems to be muscle strain over chest.
To get relief from the pain and for quick healing:
1. Do hot fomatation at the site.
2. Apply local anti-inflammatory gel 2-3 times a day.
3. Take anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen to reduce pain and local swelling or inflammation.
4. Do not lift weight or try to do exercise that involve painful muscles.
Hope this helps you.
Regards.
