Pain Between Rib & Lower Back When Moving. Why Does He Get Pain?

My father in law is experiencing pain on his right side. Somewhat between his rib and lower back. It's very tender and he said it hurts when he moves, coughs, or sneezes. He does not have pain inhaling/exhaling, or when going to the restroom. I have suggested he go his doc as I do not believe its musculoskeletal. Any ideas?
