Pain In Calf Muscles, Multiple Tests Done Advised By Orthopedic And Neurologist. Reports Normal. No Swelling. Vascular Surgeon Says Not Concerned With Veins. Suggestion?

Hi, I have been suffering from severe pain in my calf muscles for the last 7 years and have got multiple tests done (recommended by orthopedic surgeon and neurologist). The reports seem to be normal.
It’s a very sharp pain in the calf muscles and aggravates during the night time. There are 2 or 3 specific points that pain mainly and provide relief if someone presses it. I cannot sleep until someone massages balm on my calf muscles. Morning times, its fine and don’t feel much. There is no swelling on the calf muscles.
I have now consulted a vascular surgeon but he feels it is not related to veins.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Generally, nocturnal calf cramps occurs for no known reasons and are usually harmless. They generally result because of muscle fatigue, dehydration or nerve related problems.

These night calf cramps are also seen in numerous diseases and disorders. A battery of investigations are necessary to identify the underlying cause.

These leg cramps can be prevented by
* Drinking plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration
* Stretching your leg muscles or riding a stationary bicycle for a few minutes before you go to bed

There are few activities that might help in relieving these pains
* Flexing your foot up toward your head
* Massaging the cramped muscle with your hands or with ice
* Taking a hot shower or warm bath

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
