Pain In Left Side, Hip Pain, Sore When Pressed. MRI Unremarkable. Any Ideas?

Over the last 2 weeks, I've been having a sharp, acute pain in my left side. The pain is located between my lower rib and top of my hip and is very sore when pressed on. The pain occurs when I make sudden movements or when I twist either left or right, or move my left arm in any direction, or when I lean my head back sharply to tae my pills. MRIs of brain, cervical and thoracic this week were unremarkable and of no concern to my Neurologist. He has ordered a MRI of h Lumbar and a Kidney Ultrasound this week. I have not had a urinalysis or blood lab yet. I'm a 60 year old male. Do you have any thoughts or ideas on what might be causing this pain? My PCP is working with me but she is reaching out to my Neurologist for comment.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

The fact that your pain is occuring with movements indicates a muscle strain. Any strained muscle when stretched gives severe pain.

I advice you to follow the below mentioned guidelines -

* Give adequate rest to the involved muscle group and avoid any movement that causes pain
* Ice packing once in every 2 hours over the affected area
* Moist heat application to relax the muscles
* Local application of muscle relaxant gel
* Analgesic medications as needed

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
