Pain In The Rib Cage After A Popping Sound. How Would I Know If There Is A Broken Bone?

I have pain in my left upper rib cage from reaching in my washer to pull out a wet towel that was stuck on the bottom, I heard a popping sound. Pain has continued day and night depending on my position. Saw a doctor today and he said nothing can be done even if I broke my rib. No xrays taken, only prescribed pain meds. Is this accurate what I was told?

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
With the available described history, there could be less of rib fractures as you didn't get any hard injury.
There could be possibility of ligament tear after excessive exertion.
You should consult with internal medicine specialist/ general surgeon and should go for thorough check up.
You should go for chest x ray for diagnosis of fractured rib.
There is no plaster facility in case of rib fracture and it joints itself with time.
Meanwhile, you can take analgesics along with muscle relaxants for relief of your symptoms.
Take care,
Dr. Mayank Bhargava
