Pain In Wrist And Elbow, Morning Hurts The Whole Body. Advised For Anti-inflammatory Medicines And Put On Brace And Sling. Which Doctor To Consult?

I have been suffering with wrist and elbow pain for 2 months. I wake up in the mornng and my entire body hurts. i thought maybe it was arthritis because my joints get stiff Iand hurt bad in the morning. it has been debilatating. I also thought it could be tendonitis and took over the counter products such as Advil and Alieve for several weeks, but nothing helped the pain. I finally went to the clinic 3 weeks ago and they gave me more anti-inflammatory medicine and put me in a brace and sling . The doctor said if it didn't get better to see a specialist. I need to know what kind of a specialist to see.

hi there, thanxs for putting up your question on healthcaremagic.

Firstly,lets rule out few questions:

- Does the pain get worse with repetitive movement, for example, while you are working or playing a sport?(you may have tendinitis)
- Is it painful to grip a doorknob, and does the pain start on the outside of your elbow and move down your arm to your wrist?(it can be tennis elbow)
-Do you have numbness or pain in your fingers, hand, wrist or arm, especially when you flex your wrist?(it could be carpel tunnel syndrome)
-Are one or more joints swollen and tender?(You may have RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS, an inflammatory joint condition. You may also have GOUT, or an INFECTION of the joint or bone.)

Advice;
-apply ice packs,
-use the splint,it will help in reducing numbness and pain.
-take the anti-inflammatory medicine.

Please visit an orthopaedic specialist if the condition persists for further assessment.

Regards,
Dr NEHA.

Rheumatologist Dr. Amit Kansal's  Response
Hello

As per the description of your symptoms, it suggests that you are having arthritis, not tendonitis. It can be very well treated with medicines but first needs to be diagnosed properly, which requires more history and examination. Do you have any other symtoms like skin disease, eye problem, or low back pain? Continue analgesics for pain relief and keep moving the joint otherwise it will get fixed in one position. Try to see Rheumatologist in your area at earliest. Don't worry you will be fine sooner.

Best Wishes

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hi and welcome to HCM

Pain in wrist and elbow seems to be inflammatory in nature. It could be tendonitis, bursitis or acute flare of gout. Giving rest to the joint and taking antiinflammatory drug will be helpful. If pain and inflammation persist, I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance to rule any arthritic changes.

Hope this will helps you. Take care.
