Pain On Knee, Runner For Decades, Pain Reduces After Stopping Running. Any Ideas?

I have sharp pain on the outside and on the back of my knee, it hurts to squat or to bring my heal up towards my butt. I have been a runner for decades, usually running 20-25 miles a week. This pain has come on gradually, I would stop running for a week and it would usually go away, sometimes it would take 2 weeks of not running. About 6 weeks ago I ran my normal 5 miler and I could hardly bend my knee, it has gotten a little better, but I still have lots of pain on the outer knee and middle toward the rear of the knee. My last run has been 6 weeks ago. There is no way I can run with this pain, and I'm not going to run again because of the fear of permanent damage. Any ideas
Thanks,
Tom H.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The pain on the outer side of your knee is likely to be due to a meniscus injury or an injury to the internal structures of the knee. An MRI scan is required for the proper diagnosis.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
