Pain, Swelling, Nausea After Molar Extraction. Allergic To Penicillin. Dry Socket?
I had a molar extracted four days ago. I'm having a lot of pain, swelling, and nausea. The pain runs into my ear. It was difficult to sleep last night, and I'm almost out of pain medication. My dentist didn't put me on antibiotics, because I'm allergic to penicillin. I'm wondering if I could have a dry socket and/or an infection. Should I go see him again?
hello and welcome to HCM forum, I would like to inform you that pain following extraction can be from the wearing away of the anesthetic effect of the local anesthesia. We usually prescribe pain killers for 3 days after extraction. If infection persists after extraction then antibiotics are must, as you are allergic to penicillin ,clindamycin and other drugs can be prescribed. I will advise you to see your dentist soon. Dry socket/infection can be diagnosed only after clinically examining the mouth. I hope i answered your query, I wish you good health, take care.
Hi thanks for the query, Pain and swelling occurs after extraction. apply ice packs over swelling for symptomatic relief. pain killer has to be taken for pain and you can have erythromycin/ clindamycin as your are allergic to penicillin. Follow prescription twice daily for 3 days , don't forget to take an antacid first. Do warm saline rinses and use antiseptic mouthwash. Take care
hi... thanks for the query... it seems to be dry socket... visit your dentist again... he will clean the area and will place medicated gauze in your socket... and i will advice you to have proper course of antibiotics (other than penicillin)... do warm saline rinses also, 6-7 times per day... take care...
pain, swelling, and nausea post extraction is common in third molar extraction, but generally antibiotics and analgesics are prescribed for three to five days to reduce these symptoms and faster recovery.
please revisit your dentist and get the healing socket examined,to rule out a case of dry socket and also start a course of antibiotics and analgesics.
Hope this helps.
Thanks.
Take care.
