Painful Cut In The Gum After Using A New Tooth Brush. What To Do?

I got a new tooth brush the other day, and I used it that night. After I was done, I noticed I spit out blood . I had a cut in my lower left gum deep down around the bottom row of my teeth . It wasn t so bad until I brushed my teeth the next day, and irritated it worse and now it is so much worse, and it stings, and hard to smile, talk or eat and all of that.

hi and welcome to HCM,
Selection of a proper tooth brush is very important in maintaining good oral health.
according to your teeth size and gum health you can select from soft , ultrasoft , medium , and hard toothbrushes available in market.
i would suggest you to use a soft tooth brush and use the proper brushing technique like brushing the teeth in circular motion and for gums use flicking movements without any pressure this will help preventing trauma to the gums .
As your gums have got injured, avoid applying tooth brush over it, you can apply dentogel, an oral antiseptic ointment, topically over the injured area which will help in healing.
use chlorhexidine mouthwash for rinsing the mouth.
i hope this helps,
take care.

dear friend.
thanks for sharing your concern.

there could be two things.

1.your brush is too hard.get a soft bristled,or medium bristled brush.

2your gingival(gum) condition is not a very healthy one.

your history says that you have mild to moderate gingivtits.which if not managed properly can lead to periodontitis.

you are advised to visit your dentist.get xray done to chek for any infection, cavities etc

meanwhile get oral prophylaxis done.

do regular brushing,flossing.

use chlorhexidine2%mouthwash frequently
.
hope this helps.
thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query,

Trauma during brushing can be because of hard bristle toothbrush or faulty brushing technique .

I would advice you to use a soft bristle toothbrush .
Brush teeth in small circular motion slowly without applying pressure on the gums .

Apply DOLOGEL or Mucopain oral ointment over the affected area

Use 0.2% of chlorhexidine mouthwash gargles thrice daily .

Hope this helps out .

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query,
The goal of brushing is to remove food particles from around the teeth to render them clean and our breath feeling fresh. Food usually collects in the form of “plaque”, which is that whitish material that likes to hang around the gumline. So when you take your toothbrush, you are carrying it around the teeth, but often also against the gumline and maybe a little bit higher onto the gums themselves. So you brush and you brush and you brush and you’re done, great.
Keep brushing, but do so with a soft toothbrush, a light touch and with an up and down motion against the teeth to minimize destruction. It doesn’t matter if the toothbrush is manual or electric, both types can cause the same problem.
Sensitivity of any kind may be an indicator of more a serious dental and/or overall health condition.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful

Dear friend.

Thanks for sharing your concern.

The cut in your gum suggest two things.

one is that your brush is too hard. For this you need to replace your tooth brush with a medium/soft bristle bush ,based upon the texture of your gums.

second and most important thing is that, the manual dexterity with which you brush.

you have to brush your teeth gently with focusing on it ,also you do not have to spend more time brushing it.just 7 to 8 strokes is enough, followed by through mouth rinsing.

If it is possible for you, then you can go through various brushing techniques, learn them and brush your teeth effectively.

your dentist can also help you in this regard.

meanwhile apply DOLOGEL or Mucopain oral ointment over the affected area .

Hope it helps.
Thanks.

Dentist Dr. Anshumala Singh's  Response
Dear friend.

Thanks for sharing your concern.

New brush can injure the soft oral tissues, if its a hard brush.thus you require to change and get a new soft/medium bristle brush.

Also, if he brushing technique is wrong or not gentle enough it can still traumatize your soft tissues, gums and gingiva.

Thus please visit your dentist and get the details of brushing technique.please recheck your brush and replace if needed.

Meanwhile apply dologel over the injured area.It will heal soon.

Also do warm saline rinse,to prevent any further infection, and please avoid brushing in that area.you can use antiseptic mouth rinse too.

Hope it helps.

Thanks.

Take care.

Hi,
Welcome to HCM,
It seems that due to cut in the gum there is infection giving rise to this problem.
Take one course of antibiotic and anti inflammatory medicine.
Go for Listerine gargle.
Do gargling after taking any thing by mouth.
Ok and bye.
