Pea Sized Red Lump On Surface Of Scalp, Growing. Located Where Hat Rests. Should Is See A Dermatologist?

Hello. My husband has a pea-sized, red lump on the surface of his scalp, just above his ear. It is very close to the surface of his skin, as you can see small, non-raised veins in it. It does not hurt, does not produce fluid (though we haven't tried to puncture or squeeze it). It has grown over the last few months, starting as a small bump and is now about the size of a pea. He works outside and the location on his head is where his hat rests. Is this something that we should go to the doctor about? And if so, would it be best to see a dermatologist, or someone else? Thank you for your time.

Hello
Thank you for placing your query on Health Care Magic
Your description seems to fit a cyst (sebacous or dermoid) in the scalp. Don't worry. Its not difficult to treat. Neither does it cause any significant problems. You should consult a surgeon. Because the treatment is surgical excision. Mostly in adults it will be done under local anaesthesia. Not much post-op concerns. So he should do well. Consider avoiding the hat or if not at least put some cotton or soft padding on the inner lining where it rests.
Hope that helps
God bless you

Hello,
Welcome to Healthcaremagic,
From your query i understood that he may be have Sebaceous cyst.

It arise from the glands secreting oily matter that lubricates hair and skin
It is non cancerous.
Usually it does not hurt.

No special investigation, just physical examination is enough to diagnose this condition.

You can remove it ,if it grows rapidly, ruptures, infection or painful.
Total excision or laser may be used to remove it.

Hope this helps.
Any doubt, Kindly reply.
Take care.
Regards,
Dr.Manjeth
