Persistent Cough, Chest Pain, Tightness In Lungs. Taking Z-pack. Cure For Symptoms?

I have had a cough going on 3 weeks. I am currently on a Zpack (day 3) and the cough is getting better but my chest still hurts when taking in a deep breath and when coughing. The pain runs along the out side of my chest and under my left breast . When taking a deep breath it feels like it is pulling and when coughing it just hurts. It is sore when not coughing and regular breathing . I work at a school and the nurse said my lungs are clear but sound very tight, she recommended an inhaler . Not sure if I should finish the Zpack or go back to the doctors now to try to get an inhaler?

Hi Ehwilson,
Thanks for writing youur query.

After reading your post, it seems that the pain you are experiencing is due to muscule pull as a result of persistent coughing. It will decrease in due course time.

Hot fomentation and application of pain relieving gel locally will give you some relief.
If the pain is severe you can take pain killer like Ibuprofen one tablet twice a day after meals along with an antacid like Omeprazole 20 mg.

You should complete the 3 day course of Z-pack you are taking. You can add antihistaminic like Fenofexadine 120 mg once a day. This will help you in getting relief from cough.
Inhaler should be started if there are signs of bronchoconstriction, which can be judged after clinical examination and auscultation of your chest.

I hope this is helpful to you.
Thanks.

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
You are most likely suffering from acute viral infection which is involving your lower respiratory tract.
Presence of cough with chest pain suggests the diagnosis.
You should consult with internal medicine specialist/ chest physician and should go for thorough check up.
Clinical examination is must to rule out bronchoconstriction.
You should take complete antibiotic course, inhaler and Zpack as advised by your treating doctor.
You should also take steam inhalation along with muscle relaxants for relief of symptoms.
Type of cough syrup depends on clinical examination.
take care,
Dr. Mayank Bhargava
