Hi ! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.
Persistent bouts of cough could be due to
allergic cough which is common in this allergic season. You need to be examined by a physician to exclude any spasms (ronchi) in your chest during or before the cough. Possibly your doctor must have excluded this possibility which needs anti allergic medication, along with a possible
bronchodilator and nebulisation with
budesonide respules.
I do not know if you smoke or not. If you do you must stop this to get a quick relief from the present problem, and also to prevent further flare ups in your symptoms.
I do not know why your doctor thinks of
acid reflux. Do you have any symptoms of acid reflux disease like heartburn, acid eructations ? If yes, then some changes in life style along with anti acid drugs like a
proton pump inhibitor, a prokinetic drug may help you in relieving the symptoms. Also raising the head end of the bed goes a long way in relieving symptoms of acid reflux disease. I will suspect acid reflux, specially if you get sudden spasmodic cough during your sleep which wakes you up.
At the same time, I would also exclude any infectious pathology in the chest and treat it accordingly. If you have got fever with it, along with history of
weight loss, then I would further investigate you to exclude any
chronic lung disease.
In the mean time, you can go for a routine steam inhalation at least 2-3 times a day, a cough syrup, and an anti allergic medication along with an antacid.
Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
