Persistent Cough, Produces Mucous, Tickle In Upper Throat. Acid Reflux?

I have had a deep, persistent cough for 4 months. It produces mucous and is started by a tickle in my upper throat.
It is violent for 15 secs or so and occurs randomly but dry food often brings it on.i have used a netty pot to clean the sinuous but it only offers a short time effect.
My doc has prescribed a steroid sinuous spray plus Prevacid. It has had a small effect over a month or so.
He thinks it is acid reflux which doesn't come all the way to the throat.

HI
Thank for asking to HCM
Before I could give you some advise I would like to say you that any chronic cough should be tested for under laying cause, at least a routine test should be carried out like, Blood test, and X- ray of chest, if these turned unremarkable then we can talk about something else like this type of cough subsided without any treatment, may take some time, have nice day.

hello dear
thanks for your query at HCM
acid reflux usually present with pain chest called as heart burn, pain is so similar to heart realted problems.
Regurgitation of food and acid into the mouth occurs,
particularly on bending or lying flat.
this may be cause for your sensation something trickling down in throat.
cough can be due to this reflux of food contents.
for cough to come down you have to take proton pump inhibitors like pantoprazole daily .
that will decrease acid reflux and cough associated with it.
if still in query about diagnosis you might go for endoscopy and 24 hour ph monitoring for diagnosing after consulting your doctor
hope i answered your query regards

General Surgeon Dr. M Y Shareef's  Response
Hi ! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

Persistent bouts of cough could be due to allergic cough which is common in this allergic season. You need to be examined by a physician to exclude any spasms (ronchi) in your chest during or before the cough. Possibly your doctor must have excluded this possibility which needs anti allergic medication, along with a possible bronchodilator and nebulisation with budesonide respules.

I do not know if you smoke or not. If you do you must stop this to get a quick relief from the present problem, and also to prevent further flare ups in your symptoms.

I do not know why your doctor thinks of acid reflux. Do you have any symptoms of acid reflux disease like heartburn, acid eructations ? If yes, then some changes in life style along with anti acid drugs like a proton pump inhibitor, a prokinetic drug may help you in relieving the symptoms. Also raising the head end of the bed goes a long way in relieving symptoms of acid reflux disease. I will suspect acid reflux, specially if you get sudden spasmodic cough during your sleep which wakes you up.

At the same time, I would also exclude any infectious pathology in the chest and treat it accordingly. If you have got fever with it, along with history of weight loss, then I would further investigate you to exclude any chronic lung disease.

In the mean time, you can go for a routine steam inhalation at least 2-3 times a day, a cough syrup, and an anti allergic medication along with an antacid.

Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
