Persistent Fever. Alternating Between Tylenol And Motrin, No Relief. Solution?

My daughter will be going on her 3rd day with a fever that ranges from 99 to 103. We took her to the hospital on day 2. They did some tests and said it seemed to be a virus and gave her motrin. They also said to alternate doses of tylenol and motrin every 4 hrs to help lower the fever. The following day her fever had gone dowm to 98 and she was fine for about 8 hours. At night she asked for milk and went to sleep. An hour later i checked on her and her fever was back at 101. All night we ve been up alternating with the tylenol and motrin, but her fever has not dropped below 100. Is this scenario normal? Should we take her back to the hospital?

This does seem like a typical response for an illness caused by a virus. Rather than going away all at once it is common for the fever to come and go but to a lower level each time. If the fever does not continue to come down or if there are new symptoms you should see your primary care pediatrician. It is not usually necessary for a child to be seen in the ER because of fever.
