Plates Inserted In Ankle Area Due To Fracture. How Long To Walk Normally Without Support?
Hi, I am Pawel and my dad had an accident some 2 weeks ago. He broke his ankle and got some 3 fractures in the ankle. He had to undergo a surgery which got him some plates inserted into his ankle area. What i need to know is how long will it take him to walk normally without any support like he used to till now.. Any advice is also welcome regarding the care to be taken. Thanks you..
It is a standard teaching that the lower limb bones in an adult takes around 16 weeks to unite. So untill the time of fracture union, your dad should not bear weight on the leg, if he does the implants (plates & screws) will fail (break).
Serial xrays are needed in monthly intervals to know the progress of bony union.
Thanks for consultation Usually it depends upon the fixation of fracture by plates. It will take around 6 weeks usually. which may extend upto 8 weeks.
