Pre Menopause And Having Lot Of Palpitations. Anger. Advised To Take Beta Blockers. Is This Right?

I am in pre meno pause and having lots of palpitations, nothing wrong with my heart (checked it) but with those palpitations I get lots of rage. Anger and not know ing what to do. Is this normal? What can I do? My doc put me on low dose of birth control and my other doc told me to try beta blockers to get rid of those palpitations.

Hi,

It appears that you are having episodes of anxiety with palpitations which make you irritable. These are common in peri-menopausal age. Beta blockers can help reduce the palpitations but I do not expect them to be of much benefit in irritability. If required, you can take one of the SSRIs like sertraline, escitalopram etc which can be expected to work better. The other thing that may help reduce your palpitations is practicing slow and deep breathing exercises regularly as well as when having an episode. This will immediately control the palpitations.

Hope this helps you. Best wishes.
