Pregnant. Diagnosed With Hypothyroidism. Was Taking Levothyroxine. . Will This Effect Pregnancy?

Hi, My wife is pregnant and she is at 17th week of her pregnancy. She was diagnosed with hypothyroidism before the pregnancy and she was taking thyroid supplements (levothyroxine) before the pregnancy. Her current dosage is 100 mcg and she has been taking it for the past 2 months . We did her Blood work now and her TSH came back as 3.1 . The doctor said she will get back on upping the dosage. This is her second pregnancy and the first one was aborted because of poor fetal growth. 1. Because of this TSH level, is it going to affect baby development physically or mentally ?

Hi
Normal levels oh TSH lies in between 0.5-5.5..
elevated levels means hypothyroidism and low levels of TSH means hyperthyroidism.

For hypothyroidsm your wife is taking levothyroxine for the past 2 months and the levels came as with in normal limits.

continue the same dosage till delivery and after that your wife may require low dose..as pregnancy requires more thyroid hormones..

Yes the altered thyroid hormones cause both physical and mental abnormalities in the developing baby..
in the baby it may cause cretinism, a severe disorder.

Consult gynecologist for more details
thank you
