Pregnant. Diagnosed With E Coli. Prescribed Augnentin. Safe?
Hi I am 8 weeks pregnant and have been diagnosed with an e coli UTI sensitive to augmentin and nitrofuratoin. GP has prescribed augmentin and taken a CBC. I am concerned about taking the augmentin at this stage of pregnancy when my UTI symptoms are minimal and it was only picked up on routine urinalysis. Is it worth the risk to wait and see if the infection clears on its own or is that unlikely with the e coli? I don't want to run the risk of kidney infection, but realise this is a sensitive point in pregnancy to take this medication
Hello,
Urinary tract infections are common during pregnancy, and the most common causative organism is Escherichia coli. UTI's are more common during pregnancy because of changes in the urinary tract. If the UTI goes untreated, it may lead to a kidney infection. Kidney infections may cause early labor and low birth weight.
Most antibiotics given are those which are safe in pregnancy. Antibiotics which are usually given in pregnant women for e.coli uti are Cephalexin, erythromycin, nitrofurantoin, Augmentin and Bactrim.
You can go ahead with the antibiotic therapy without fear of any abnormality to your child.
Thanks

Hi,
You are in the 1st trimester of your pregnancy. You have E coli UTI, for which Augmentin and Nitrofurantoin are recommended as per culture & sensitivity report. You say that your UTI symptoms are minimal. Now the question of severity of UTI should not be taken into account.
Both are safe drugs to use in the 1st trimester of pregnancy along with drinking of plenty of water
Whereas the tab Nitrofurantoin is contra indicated during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy.Consult with a gynecologist.
Best wishes
