Pregnant. Having A Hole In The Heart And Had A Minor Stroke. Will This Be A Complication During The Pregnancy?

My daughter in law is 3 months pregnant. She just found out that she has a hole in her heart by experiencing some loss of sight in one eye. Dr. told her she had a mini stroke. My question is what is her risk of experiencing more issues during her pregnancy? This is her 2nd baby and she didn't have any issues with the first baby.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

A stroke occurs either due to a blockage of blood vessels or due to bleeding blood vessels. When a stroke occurs at a young age it is usually related to clotting issues resulting in increased clot formation. The clot would subsequently obstruct a vessel in the brain.

Pregnancy and the post partum period is associated with an increased risk of stroke especially if there is a previous history.
Remember there is an increased risk, it does not mean that it would necessarily occur.

Your daughter may want to discuss this risk with her doctors and determine what can be done to minimise it.

I hope this helps
