Pregnant. Noticed Swelling In Hand And Feeling Dizzy. Should I Consult A Doctor?

Hi, I m 33wks and 2days pregnant. My hands have been swelling up. Not to an extreme, but enough to where it s hard to get my rings off and they hurt or tingle. Also, I woke up today very dizzy. I laid down for a couple of hours and yet I still feel light headed. Should I go to the hospital or wait to get an appointment with my doctor?

Hello,

Thanks for your question.

Mild swelling of the hands and feet during pregnancy can occur because of the pressure of the pregnant uterus on blood vessels (veins) leading to fluid retention. However this is seen commonly on the feet (dependent part of the body) , worsens toward the end of the day and does not extend up the leg.

Swelling of the hands in pregnancy could also suggest carpal tunnel syndrome . Here the nerves supplying the hand pass through a tunnel under the wrist where they can be compressed by the walls of the tunnel due to fluid retention in pregnancy. Symptoms are similar to what you describe. You can improve this by avoiding heavy lifting, keeping the affected hand elevated, icing it for 10-15 min a day, wearing a splint and avoiding smoking.

You also complain of dizziness which could be because of the blood pressure variation when you change posture. If you have been diagnosed with Hypertension during this/previous pregnancy , I would suggest you get checked up to rule out Gestational Hypertension (high blood pressure during pregnancy ) which can also cause swelling of the extremities and requires immediate treatment.

I hope this answers your question.
