Pregnant, First Kid Diagnosed With Diabetes Mellitus. What Precautions Should I Take To Avoid The Same?
Hi, i am pregnant with my second child and would like to ask question which is more related to my first pregnancy, however will be useful now. So, about six months after i gave birth to my first child i was diagnosed with Hashimoto and had to take some hormone supplements for about a year. After this period it' s been more than three years already i stopped the intake of l-thyroxine and my TSH is at normal levels. My concern is related to the fact that my first kid was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus about 2 years ago and i am wondering could this be somehow related to some thyroid gland problems during my first pregnancy. Are there any specific test i should go through this pregnancy to avoid future complications in my second child. Just for information neither i nor the father has dabetes, however my sister is the only one with diabetes in the family which was diagnosed at much later age -22years old.
Hello,
I would want to clarify few things for you.
You were not suffering from any thyroid disorder during your first pregnancy because your hypothyroidism was caused by post partum thyroiditis which occurs after many weeks of delivery of the child.
Other thing is that a person suffering from diabetes type one has more chances of developing autoimmune thyroid disorder and not the vice versa.
As far as development of type 1 diabetes in your child is concerned, the exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown. Scientists do know that in most people with type 1 diabetes, the body's own immune system — which normally fights harmful bacteria and viruses — mistakenly destroys the insulin-producing (islet) cells in the pancreas. Genetics may play a role in this process, and exposure to certain viruses may trigger the disease.
Make sure that you are not hypothyroid any more as any hypothyroidism,at the moment, would harm the growth of your second child.
Thanks
