hello there..
Deranged liver functions with itching which develops in pregnancy is due to a condition called
Cholestasis of pregnancy.
Cholestasis of pregnancy is a condition in which the normal flow of bile in the
gallbladder is affected by the high amounts of pregnancy hormones. It is more common in the last trimester of pregnancy when hormones are at their peak, but it usually goes away within a few days after delivery. It presents with Itching, particularly on the hands and feet ,Dark urine color,Light coloring of stools, Fatigue or exhaustion, Loss of appetite,Depression.
Risks to the baby are fetal distress( decrease or increases heart beat), preterm birth, or stillbirth.
Dont worry , it is treatable and favorable outcome of pregnancy is definite if you take certain precautions which are as follows:
Keep a record of your baby movements which should be atleast 10 per day (3 after each meal).Incase less, report to your doctor immediately.
Good rest with adequate diet and fluid intake.
Regular antenatal check ups with your doctor with monthly Liver function tests.
Non stress test( record of baby's
heart rate) or
biophysical profile to assess growth and movements of baby( twice or once a month depending on reports).
Treatment is usually done with Topical anti-itch medications or medication to decrease the concentration of bile acids such as
ursodeoxycholic acid.
Do visit your doctor personally with all reports. Also make sure you have got your blood tested for HbsAg ,
Hepatitis C antigen, and HIV to rule out other causes of deranged LFT. Also an ultrasound abdomen to rule out
gall bladder stones.
