I quit smoking 2 weeks ago & ever since I have a really bitter/metallic taste in my mouth, very sore roof of mouth & yellowish hairy coating on my tongue. The chemist ruled out oral thrush & I have very good dental hygiene- I often brush, floss, scrape & rinse with listerine . No matter what I do I cant get rid of this taste? I have also been gargling warm salt water. Please help??? Thanks.
Clean the teeth with tongue scraper .

Drink lots of water .If fever , cough is present , the condition will resolve once the condition go away .
hi, thnx for your query, bitter or metallic taste is due to enlarged papillae[taste buds] because of smoking. smoking results in increased keratin production and results in increase of dead cell count.as a result the cells get accumalated and cause hair like appearance.this is annoying for appearance but can be cured with using a tounge scraper regularly and maintainance of proper oral hygiene. do not stop smoking all of a suddence this results in more problamatic effects, better use NICORETTE CHEWING GUM . hope this finds helpful.
on sudden cessation of smoking such symptoms do arise.do not worry.do this gradually or in tapering doses.
It is good, that you are following good oral hygiene measures, continue with that it will help you lot.
The coating on your tongue is due to inflammation of the papillae, after which it leads to accumulation of bacteria and further production of yellow pigment and metallic taste too.
To overcome this, you can use tongue scraper .
Also,i would suggest you to clean the tongue with solution containing one part of hydrogen peroxide and five parts water .
This type of metallic taste is also experienced during fever and dehydration.
There fore take plenty of fluids and keep yourself hydrated.
Hope this helps.
Thanks
Regards.

Hi, Thanks for asking the query, Yellow coating on the tongue is caused by inflammation of the papillae , which then collect bacteria and build up yellow pigment. Smoking , mouthbreathing , dehydration and fever all causes papillae to be inflammed. Clean the teeth with tongue scraper . Drink lots of water .If fever , cough is present , the condition will resolve once the condition go away . Hope this helps out . Regards...
