Hello and welcome to HCM,
Barrier methods of
contraception prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STD).
Unprotected sexual intercourse can transmit STDs.
Any rupture or breakage of barrier
contraceptive can also transmit STDs.
HIV infection should be suspected in cases of unsafe sexual activity, or rupture or damage to barrier contraceptive.
Development of fever, weight loss- > 10% over a period of six months,
diarrhea are suggestive of HIV infection.
Any rash, ulcer or lymph node on the external genitalia can develop in case of STDs other than HIV infection.
ELISA test is the first line test done for HIV infection.
It can be negative during window period.
In this case the ELISA should be repeated after a period of 3 months.
If negative after 3 months, no further tests are required.
If positive western blot needs to be done.
Thanks and take care
