Reason For Pain In Upper Left Quadrant With Severe Constipation And Toxic Megacolon Problem
My son is 16 and has been in the hospital for 18 days with severe pain in the upper left quadrant and has had severe constipation for his whole life he was diagnosed with toxic megacolon at 1 year. He had pancreatitis 2 years ago.... but no one can seem to give us a reason for the pain.
Hello, I can understand your concern for your son's health. 1) Episode of pancreatitis, history of toxic megacolon (? with need for surgery) are possible reasons for appearance of pain in left upper abdomen. 2) History of pancreatitis can cause inflammation related changes to pancreas itself and to surrounding area. This might affect nerve supply to pancreas and develop pain. 3) History of toxic megacolon with possible requirement of surgery in past also cause structural changes in large intestine with surrounding inflammation due to disease itself and also due to surgery (if done). 4) Such pain require strong painkiller (opioid analgesic) like morphine. 5) If pain reappear after treatment with such strong medications then injection of anesthetic agent near nerve plexus to block nerve (nerve block therapy) also very effective to reduce such intractable pain
Hope I answered your query. If you have any further doubts, I would be happy to help you. Have a nice day!
