Red Eyes, Sensitivity To Light, Occasional Crusting, Soreness, Diagnosed With Bacterial Conjunctivitis. Ointment Ineffective. Advise?
Hi there
My 14 year old daughter has been suffering for a few months will redness to her eyes, very sensitive to light and occassional crusting. She also states that they are sore.
She has seen a GP who stated that she had bacterial conjuctivitis and prescribed her some ointment but this keeps becoming an re occurring problem.
For the last couple of days her eyes are red again and look sore under her bottom lid and this morning her eyes were crusty and the top lids were slightly swollen. She is still complaining that the light hurts her.
I have an appointment with a GP later today but wonder if you could shed any light on this at all?
Thank you
Conjunctivitis almost never lasts for such a long time. It usually responds to antibiotics and the eyes become alright within a few days. Your symtoms are more suggestive of a condition called blepharitis in which there is an infection of the lid margin and the eye lashes. This causes the crusting, light sensitivity and early morning discomfort. Try doing eye compresses with warm wet cloth twice daily and lid scrubs with Johnson's baby shampoo. A simple lubricating drop like Refresh Tears will be soothing. In case it doesn't respond to this treatment within a week, you must consult a cornea specialist.
