Red, Swollen, Painful Lumps On The Toes Which Is Preventing Walking.

My toes have appeared to have blisters like lumps that are red and painful for the past 2 months. I saw a doctor when a dark spot appeared on one toe. He did not know what it was. He advised blood pressure medicine due to cold toes even though my blood pressure is usually around 110 over 64. I said no. He thought it might be a virus also. I thought it was getting better but now all my toes are appearing red, swollen, and very painful. I am not walking due to soreness, no new shoes or any other factor that I can think of.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

The symptoms are suggestive of either

* chilblains (particularly, if the lumps appeared during cold weather) ; or, an atypical presentation of gout. A blood pressure drug, called Propranolol or Metoprolol in low dose, along with baby aspirin will help.

* An atypical presentation of gout.

Get your thyroid hormone test and blood uric acid done to pinpoint the exact cause.

Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me, order required tests, and- based on the reports- will prescribe suitable/modified treatment as advised.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE ALL doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.

Take care
