Safe To Stop Taking Hydrochlorothiazide Due To Skin Rashes?
We think my husband is having skin rashes due to hydrochlorothiazide htzt 12.5 which he has been taking with 20mg lisinopril. For years. Is it safe to suddenly stop taking the htzt portion and what is a good diuretic alternative. In addition he takes 100mg metoprolol twice a day. He has had staph aeurus before in his left leg in 2007. But it seems it might have come back. the docs have not taken a culture as he does not have an open wound, He was given Vancomycin in the hospital a few weeks ago plus Flagyl and leg was doing better. He was given Bactrim after being sent home but his leg became red and scaly again. I found his records from the 2007 outbreak of staph and found he was allergic to Bactrim. They gave him clindamycin then successfully. Our doc provided this finally so we are hoping for improvement soon. He was wrapped in a pro fore and will see the wound center in two days. Was it just not healed due to not being wrapped or not taking the clindamycin? He is allergic to sulfa drugs, could the Bactrim have made his condition worse? He has no fever and only minor irritation sometimes. Wondering if the sulfa drugs has caused the skin problems he also has rashes and itchy blisters when out in the cold for too long. Wondering if the htzt has caused that allergic reaction. He is sensitive to lots of things. We also did aply the steropid cream for ten days after the hospital. then one day I applied to a few red spots and got a bad reaction, inflamed skin and now the inflammation has spread again all in the back of the left leg. He also has cellulitis for a long time in upper thigh next to knee.
the steroid cream wont be a good idea. you may stop hydroclorthiazide only after consultation with your cardiologist. warm 'sterile water' compresses can be done. followed by topical fucidin cream. dr. sunil.
