Salty Taste In Mouth, Dry Lips. Negative Diabetes Test, Normal Cholesterol, No Dental Problems. Cause?

Hi, I have been having a persistent salty taste in my mouth for a couple of weeks. My lips and mouth have also been dry and I have been drinking a lot of water. I went to see my physician who suspected I may have diabetis. The lab results came fine, no abnormal values. The only thing she said we need to monitor is my cholesterol level ( 170 I believe). I had a dental exam as well and my dentist didn't see any signs of gum inflamtion, etc. Also, I am not taking any medications that could possibly cause this. I am puzzled at the moment since I can't really figure out why I have this salty, sometimes metallic taste in mouth?!

Hello dear
The salty /metallic taste of mouth can be because of medications or pus and inflammation in gums or sinusitis. So first rule out all these conditions. If still it persist then go for water therapy. In this therapy you will fill tthe water in mouth till maximum and move the water side by side in mouth. Do it for 30 seconds with 10 repetitions.do this after every brushing i.e. three times a day.i hope it can resolve your problem.

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Salty, metallic taste in mouth is usually occurs with-
Pericoronitis of impacted wisdom tooth.
Fever/throat infection.
Medications.
decayed teeth.
A thorough clinical examination is required by a dentist as well as physician.
You can go for second opinion too.
Get decayed teeth restored if present.
Impacted teeth has to be extracted/flap overlying tooth has to be removed.
Replace the medicines if causing metallic taste in mouth.
Keep yourself nourished.
If required, salivary substitutes can be administered.
Hope this helps.

Dear friend.

Thanks for sharing your concern.

Altered taste sensation could be due to many reasons, like poor oral hygiene.depositions on tongue, mild to moderate gingivitis, sinus infection, and tonsillitis.

Due to consumption of few foodstuffs like garlic, onion etc can also cause altered taste temporarily.

you can also expect systemic causes like GERD, and DIABETES.nice to know diabetes has been ruled out.

But as you have mentioned about dry mouth,i am suspecting any inflammation to your salivary glands.please elaborate symptoms related to this if any.

Hope it helps.

Thanks.

Take care.

Hello there ,

Thanks for writing your query,

Bad or mettalic taste in the mouth is caused by number of reasons such as;

Reduced salivary secretion or XEROSTOMIA may lead to salty taste in mouth.

Poor oral hygiene , improper brushing techniques which lead to accumulation of food debris and bacterial plaque and calculus deposits deep in the gum pockets and root surfaces of the teeth .
bacterial plaque and calculus on the teeth gives fowl odor nad bad taste.

Gingivitis and periodontitis is another condition which leads to bad taste .

Ulcers when infected with bacterial or viral invasion .

alcohol consumption also promotes plaque deposition and gives fowl odor.

stomach reflux , GERD and other gastric problems may also lead to acidic mouth taste .
you need to consult a physician to get the problem confirmed.

Maintain good oral hygiene by practicing regular mouth rinsing with lukewarm saline water or antiseptic mouthwash like betadine or chlorhexidine.

start with vitamin C lozenges or chewing gums will promote salivation and help in resolving the problem.

i hope this helps ,

take care.

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query,

Salty taste in mouth can be due to inflammation of the leading to gingivitis and periodontis, decayed tooth draining its abscess in the oral cavity, prolonged use of certain medications, depositions on the tongue, sinusitis, tonsillitis.

I would suggest you to visit to a Dentist and get the thorough clinical examination done.
Go for symptomatic treatment of complete mouth scaling and polishing.
Maintain a good oral hygiene, brush twice daily, use antiseptic mouthwash like chlorhexidine gargles twice daily, clean your tongue with a soft bristle toothbrush or tongue scraper.
Take balanced diet, drink lots of water and keep yourself hydrated.

Hope this solves your problem.

Hi,
You have not mentioned your age and I would like to know if you are suffering froma ny gastric problem. Usually patients with gastric problems suffer from a odd taste in their mouth due to the gastric reflux. In such patients ayurvedic medications provide better relief for acidity problems and the odd taste in the mouth reduces.
