What are the long term outcome of a schizophrenic patient. What is the downside of it as they get older. The person is 41, speech is slurred. Takes a while to respond and remember things or don't remember at all and have bits and pieces of certain memories. Was told by a physician that their life maybe short term. Is their any truth to this/
Schizophrenia is a disorder with variable symptomatology. Mainly the symptoms like delusions and hallucinations are seen. With time change in Behavior occurs. Usually cognitive decline in form of loss of memory, concentration etc are seen only after years. Slurred speech may be observed due to side effects of medicines like tardive dyskinesia etc. The patients of schizophrenia have comparatively less life span as compared to normal persons due to complications arising from side effects of drugs or due to accidents or suicide. Consult a psychiatrist for proper treatment.
