Hello,
Welcome to HCM.
Tests that may be done during a
semen analysis include:
A semen analysis is usually done to test the semen and
sperm count, often during
infertility work up and at times after a vasectomy or
vasectomy reversal operation. It is intended to check semen volume, semen pH, liquifaction time, fructose levels, sperm count,
sperm motility and sperm morphology.
Normal volume per ejaculation in 2-5 ml, anything less would be abnormal. Liquefaction time is when the semen which is usually viscous and thick liquefies or thins up to release sperms. Normally, it is 20-30 mins. Since the sperms will have to travel a long way, the later the liquefaction, the better it is. Sperm count is the number of sperms in one ejaculation, which is normally 20 million. Low sperm counts are called
oligospermia and may be associated with infertility. Sperm shape or morphology is usually normal (head, body and tail). Abnormal sperms such as having two heads or two tails, a short tail, a tiny head (pinhead), or a round (rather than oval) head may be unable to move normally or to penetrate an egg. Sperm motility or movement is normal if 50 % are forward moving. Semen pH is normally 7-8. A vast difference may kill the sperms. White blood cells may be found if there is any infection.
Hence, your semen analysis reflects only slight motility problem and may not impact your fertility greatly. Figs have been known to help improve semen motility as per experience.
