Severe Back Pain, Constipated, Could Not Walk. Diagnosed As Compression Fracture. Suggestions ?

I have been out of the hospital for two weeks now. I went in for severe back pain where I could not walk at the time when the pan was so severe. I was on three types o pain meds in the hospital. Pain patch, shot, and pills. I was constipated and could not walk. Now since at home, oh they diagnosed it as compression fracture due to my osteoporosis.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

An osteoporotic compression fracture in the spine is said to be STABLE, if it is not associated with any neurological compromise.

Generally, the treatment for this condition is conservative by following means -
* Bed rest - so as to give some time for the tissues to heal
* Bracing - Dorso lumbar support to offer some protection for the back
* Anagesics and muscle relaxants as and when necessary
* Daily Calcium supplementations
* Physical therapy - once the acute pain subsides, physiotherapy for back muscles is started
* Regular exercise - in the form of walking so as to keep your muscles toned and your bones strong

If you are not getting any relief of pain with the above measures, you may need a surgical procedure in the form of Kyphoplasty / Vertebroplasty depending on the degree of compression.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
