Severe Cough, Shortness Of Breath, Chest Tightness, Negative Pneumonia. Cure?

I went to the doctor Tuesday with a history of 3 wks of what I thought was an upper respiratory infection/ sinus infection . There was considerable mucous and on coughing I was able to bring up mucous and get rid of it. Also, I was developing a little shortness of breath with a recent bit of chest tightness. My doctor ordered x-ray which showed lungs were negative for pneumonia . However on exam she said my wheezing was due to mucous in the airways. She ordered Ventolin inhaler 2 puffs every 4 hrs. for cough as needed . Since coughing is off and on but not continuous all day, with some coughing through the night, I was concerned that it was too much of the Ventolin. I ve never been on an inhaler and not sure about this. I spoke with the pharmacist and read the insert and pharmacist suggested to start it as ordered and watch the coughing. How much coughing warrants 2 puffs 4x a day? Also, how long should I be on the inhaler? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, Thanks for using HCM.

Albuterol should be taken only when there is breathlessness and not routinely as it is a bronchodilator for short period. You take it when necessary and not every day. Since you have this symptoms only since 3 weeks this will be enough to control bronchospasm with an anti inflamatory drug. If your parents or you have any allergy history then get done one spirometry to diagnose if you are asthmatic, then can start inhalational steroid for control of asthma. If you develop fever then can start antibiotic. Do salt water gargla and steam inhalation twica a day. This may relieve your symptoms. Consult your doctor for examination and management.
Hope I answered your question. Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries.
Wish you good health. Take care.
