Severe Itch Around The Legs After Getting Wet. Aquagenic Puritis?
About two yrs ago I begin to notice after I would bathe I began to itch like crazy specifically around my legs. This issue has worsened for me I itch when drying from being caught in the rain, after bath if I sweat a Little, and sometimes my legs just itch at night. I read about aquagenic puritis nothing seems to relieve the itching. Help
Hi,aquagenic pruritus occurs after contact with water. It may be primary or secondary. Secondary aquagenic pruritu may be associated with certain diseases.. like polycythemia vera, juvenile xanthogranuloma, hemochromatosis, essential thrombocythemia, hypereosinophilic syndrome..etc .H1 and H2 blockers such as loratadine, doxepin or cimetidine have historically been the first line of pharmacological treatment, but not all sufferers find relief with these medications. When antihistamines do work, loratadine seems to be the most effective for mild cases and doxepin most effective for more severe cases..You may try application of capsaicin cream on the affected areas.Ultraviolet-B Phototherapy may be helpful .
Cream like Cimetidine and Claritin, known for blocking H1 and H2 are also good treatments for Aquagenic pruritus. These symptoms can be avoided by using cotton clothes and bedding... Sodabicarb water bath may be tried.
Aspirin,steroids,neltrexone,propanolol,fluoxetin,clonidin..etc may be tried. If there is seconadary aquagenic pruritus, treat the cause.. All this should be done under supervision of competent dermatologist..ok
