Shaking In Fingers And Arms, Could Not Walk Or Stand After Given The Injection For Numbness For Tooth Extraction. Cause?

I recently had a tooth extracted given one injection for numbing. It was extremely painful, While waiting for my son to pick me up I felt worse and worse,,It got to the point I couldn't talk or stand up. A lady ran and got a nurse. They said I was extremely white. I was put on a stretcher with my head down and feet up. Put on oxygen..In the far distance I could hear them talking but could not open my eyes or talk. I was cold and clammy. My pulse was 142, BP 168/96 and I had begun to shake in my fingers first then going up my arms. I am not a diabetic, The doctor told them to get sugar in me stat that I was hypoglycemic. What would cause this and should I consult my primary care doctor?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
You must have been given injection lidocaine which is used to numb the local area so that a monorail surgical procedure like tooth extraction can be done.
Some times reactions occur due to the use of lidocaine occur and they are confusion, twitchings, ringing in ears, blurred vision, convulsions, increased heart rate fast breathing etc.
It doesn't cause any hypoglycemia and what you had was allergic reaction to injection lidocaine.
Although it was not hypoglycemia, however get yourself evaluated by getting blood sugar fasting and PP done to rule out diabetes.
Thanks

Diabetologist Dr. Pratap VGM's  Response
Dear sir/madam

usually before tooth extraction they will give local anesthetic injection such as lignocaine with adrenaline which helps in analgesia and to control bleeding at the site.

It might have caused reaction?? Lignocaine is noted to cause reaction secondly adrenaline may cause increased heart rate, that might be the reason you had 142 heart rate.

You can consult your primary care doctor once, but allergies do subside once if you get treated properly at that time

Thanks
