Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Joint replacement surgery is the end stage treatment for osteoarthritis of knees.
This is generally indicated if all methods of conservative management fail to provide relief from pain.

Also, Total knee replacement is basically indicated for elderly people (usually beyond 60 years) with gross degenerative arthritis of knees which makes them difficult to perform their activities of daily living.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hi,

A knee replacement is major surgery, so is normally only recommended if other treatments, such as physiotherapy or steroid injections, haven't helped reduce pain or improve mobility.

You may be offered knee replacement surgery if:
you have severe pain, swelling and stiffness in your knee joint and your mobility is reduced
your knee pain is so severe that it interferes with your quality of life and sleep
everyday tasks, such as shopping or getting out of the bath, are difficult or impossible
you cannot work or have a normal social life

The earlier you have a knee replacement, the greater the chance you will eventually need further surgery.

Have a nice day!
