Sharp Pain In Right Hand, Fingers, Arm Numbness, Shooting Pain In Left Arm. Causes For Symptoms?

evening, I have been having sharp pains in my right hand, all fingers that awakens me thru the night, the only releif I have found is to dangle my arm over the side of the bed, this stops it from stabbing only, still aches... both hands frequently fall asleep, and sporadic shooting pains in left hand as well. The right hand tho was only the pinky and ring finger until a week ago, now its all fingers and thumb .

Dear Concerned.,
Thanks for writing to us.
With the available history only probabalities can be said ie., Differential Diagnosis .A detailed work up only can pinpoint at definitive cause.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
The compression of nerve fibres supplying the hand passing under the Flexor Retinaculum in the wrist causes sharp pains in hands especially palmar surface , this condition is describes as Carpal tunnel syndrome.Usually the Median Nerve is invoved. There will be shooting pains in hands that awakens a person from sleep.Obesity/Hypothyroidism/Pregnancy/Diabetes /Amyloidosis/Sarcoidosis/ may be co morbid conditions.
RSI;- Repetitive Stress Injury associated with always using key boards of computers may be a contributory factor.
Diagnosis is by Nerve Conduction Tests and Electro Neuro Myography. In addition routine blood tests/Urine tests to be done to rule out co morbid conditions.
Initially painkiller tablets, local physiotherapy and sometimes vitamins (Vit B12) and oral steroids are effective.
Injection of Intralesional Steroids also give relief.
Definitive treatment is by "Carpal Tunnel Release" by Orthopedic Surgeon.
Second D/D;-Your condition may also be associated with Cervical Radiculopathy if it is Left Arm Pain , kindly investigate the same by Cervical Spine X-ray/CT or MRI as decided by your Specialist.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.,
Best Regards.,

Diabetologist Dr. Zaheer Shaikh's  Response
Hello
In my opinion the cause of your complaints could be a problem with your neck bones compressing on nerve that supplies the upper limbs. Please get an MRI of the cervical spine and consult an orthopaedic doctor. Also get your blood sugar levels checked. Diabetes can also cause nerve degeneration with similar symptoms
Wish you good health
