Sharp, Severe Pain In Thumb, Warm And Swollen. Reason?
I am experiencing pain in the thumb of my left hand, precisely in the middle part of thumb (joint of Metacarpal pollicis and Phalanx proximalis). It started yesterday, slowly in the beginning and, within few hours, became very sharp and severe. It appeared at intervals and lasted during the night (couldn't sleep). Now, in the morning, the pain is moderate. The pain appears with feeling of „pulsing“ and the thumb is warm and a little bit swollen.
Note: there is no pain in the lower part (base) of my thumb.
Hi and thanks for the query, The symptoms you just described are the main characteristics f an acute inflammatory process. It is very important to get this examined in order to exclude an infectious process. Left untreated, an abscess could be formed and spread to neighboring structures of the body and causing a generalized blood infection is a possibility. Treatment will involve appropriate antibiotics, analgesics and anti inflammatory drugs. consult your primary care physician. Thanks and kind regards
