Shorter Leg Due To Polio, Weak Muscles And Severe Pain In The Joints. Any Treatment Available?
Hi, My wife s right leg is polio affected and is slightly shorter, though she can walk without much difficulty. But the muscles are very week and she cannot control the leg freely. She also has severe pain in the joints. Is there any treatment available in Bangalore. We did see a few orthopedic s, but have not found any solution. Thanks

Dear your, All your wife need at this stage is proper rehabilitation. Personally I don't know about the Bangalore city but I would suggest you to go to the PMR (Physical Medicine and Rehabilatation) dept at AIIMS new Delhi, If you have patience and faith in the Govt. healthcare system. I have studied and worked at the same Institute and I know it is very difficult for ordinary patient to get treatment there But I can assure you that you will find best medical talent of the country in that place.

Polio affected muscles are always weak and underdeveloped. They lack the inherent "tone" which normal muscles have.
There is no way to increase the muscle strength in polio affected limbs (atleast till date). Secondary to the effect of underdeveloped muscles, even the bones are weak and soft in polio affected persons.
The only way to deal with your wife's problem is to use CALIPERS which will provide support and stability to the limb.
