Should Allopurinol Be Taken For Life Time For The C4-5 Radiculopathy?
was diagnosed with c4-5 radiculopathy and ddd and spinal stenosis on MRI I also suffer from gout, esp. of the right big toe and to some extent left big toe I regularly take bodybuilding exercises with moderate weights Is this because of high uric acid which might be impinging on the nerve? Should we have to take regular lifelong allopurinol for this?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Mukesh Chugh's Response
Hi Thanks for writing your query The radiculopathy and canal stenosis are usually not caused by gout. There are two types of medicine for gout. First, for control of acute attacks of joint pain, there are NSAIDs, colchicine and corticosteroids. Second, after attacks have resolved, there are medications that can lower the level of uric acid over time, to prevent or cause the attacks to occur less often. People with chronic gout usually require lifetime treatment with drugs to lower uric acid levels. Lifestyle changes such as controlling weight, limiting alcohol intake and limiting meals with meats and fish rich in purines also can help control gout. Take care and wish you good health.
