Should I Be Worried About Ovary Being Left In During Hysterectomy?

I went in to have a complete hysterectomy and when I woke I up post surgery I was told they left one ovary in because they couldn t find it. I am upset because I really wanted it all gone...having a lot of breast cancer in my family. Should I be worried?

Hello,
You really need not worry if you do not have any other indication to get the ovary removed apart from the family history of breast cancer. A history of ovarian cancer in the close family strongly recommends a regular follow up of the ovaries. Since, you do not have any such situation, you can relax. You can have regular follow up as usual and with tumor markers in view of the family history of breast disease. Please contact your gynecological oncologist for further advice. Wish you good health.
