Should I Get Vaccinated For Shingles If I Have Already Been Treated For The Same?

Hello Dr Rynne,
I had shingles about 12 years ago when I was about 67 years old. (Yes I had chicken pox as a young child.
My aunt was a physician and got me to visit a friend who had it so I would get it and get it over with!
My question: can I get shingles again or should I get the shingles vaccine?
Thank you in advance,
Caroline A. Christy

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The shingles vaccine does become less protective over time, typically within the first five years.

So, I suggest getting vaccinated when you are 60 or older, which can reduce your risk of shingles infection.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
