Should I Go For A Myomectomy Instead Of Hysterectomy For Removal Of Fibroids Causing Heavy Periods?

Hi I have multiple fibroids, my periods are extremely heavy as a result I m anemic. My period had stopped for two months then It came last month. I m scheduled for a hysterectomy but I m having seconds thoughts. I am 51years old. I m am thinking I would prefer to have a Myomectomy. Can you please advise.Thank you.

Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Surgery is definitely indicated as your cycles are heavy due to fibroids.
Myomectomy is not always possible.
A lot depends on the type of fibroids.
If the fibroids are multiple, generally they are difficult to remove in isolation.
IF they are in the interior part of the uterus, or in difficult to access places such as the cervix, then hysterectomy maybe required.
If there is involvement of ureter or bowels or the tissues are very adherent, even then hysterectomy would be done.
In case of excessive blood loss during surgery, similar extensive surgery would be needed.
A lot depends on your scan results and per operative findings.
