Should I Go For Gastric Bypass Surgery For Acid Reflux While Being Overweight?
Hi, I am over weight by about 60-70 lobs, and have had bad acid reflux for a long time. Gastric bypass surgery has been recommended to me. I ve had all the tests, Bravo, Upper GI, Barium Swallow, Esophageal Manometry and they all point to surgery, but the surgeon said that just repairing the esophagus could cause me more problems with swallowing food and water which is why he said gastro surgery was a better way to go. Your thoughts?
Noted you history well. Overweight itself can cause acid reflux and since you have already undergone the tests of barium, upper GI endscopy and esophageal manometry, you may go for surgery as advised. The problem about only lower esophageal repair has its own problems.
Hence you have been suggested gastric bypass surgery which will reduce our weight and thus help with reflux permanently without an actual lower esophageal surgery. So best way is to follow the advise your Doctor/Surgeon as he knows your problems in detail.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant,
General Surgeon
