Should I See A Doctor For Sore Throat?

Hello Doctor,

This weekend I had a sore throat. Then I got cold symptoms: headaches, sneezing, watery eyes; then on Tuesday I lost my voice. I still cannot talk. Do you think I to see doctor to get prescription medicine (like antibiotics)? Or just rest? Thank you.

Hi,
Welcome to healthcare magic.

I have read the query and going by the symptoms described by you it is most likely an Upper respiratory tract infection you are suffering from. The symptoms like congestion in throat which may be causing difficulty in talking sneezing, watery eyes due to cold indicate an added bacterial infection and require a course of antibiotics for the relief of symptoms.

I suggest my patients with similar symptoms following measures for cure of infection:

1. Drink warm water and gargling 3-4 times a day with warm water with saline , if congestion in throat persists you can buy tantum gargles(combination of antiseptic and anesthetic)/ betadine gargles.

2. Strictly avoid eating unhealthy, oily and cold foodstuffs.

3. Eating healthy food is essential for good immunity against further infections.

4.Antibiotic like tab.Augmentin for 5 days will help in reduction of infection and quick relief.Vitamin C tablets like Limcee have a good impact i reduction of symptoms.

4. Steam inhalation 2-3 times a day especially before sleep with an anti histaminic like tab.cetrizine once at bedtime will help reduce the symptoms due to cold.Good sleep is very essential, so take adequate rest as and when possible.

5.Ocean saline nasal spray will also help in preventing drying and itching of nose.

6.Don't worry,by following these measures you will be alright in a week but still if the symptoms persist then you can consult an ENT specialist for a proper examination to rule out any other cause of symptoms.

Hope this answers the query.
