Should I Undergo Surgery For Pilonidal Cyst If It Is Not Painful?
Hello, I had a pilonidal cyst back in 2004 or 2005 not sure which year and had to get it drained in the emergency room due to the pain. I was advised that I might have to have surgery to keep it from reoccurring. I did not have insurance at the time nor enough sick time at work to have the surgery preformed. Since then I have not had any issues with the cyst, however, I now have another job with insurance and sick time saved up. Should I schedule an appointment to have the surgery done now or just wait to see if it comes back? I certainly would prefer not to have the surgery if there is no current pain. Is it possible that the cyst is doing any damage or getting worse if there is no pain after all the years? Thank you for helping.
Hello and welcome to HCM, A pilonidal cyst can recur if not removed surgically. Accumulation of pus in pilonidal cyst can cause pain and fever. Right now the cyst is asymptomatic, however, it can turn symptomatic. It will be good if you get it surgically removed so a to prevent further complications.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja P Wahal
